RIP Len York (08/06/2017)

Ron Bentley has learnt of the recent death of Len York. Len was an inspiration to many Tipton Harriers during the 1960's, 70's & 80s.

Len (born 28/04/1927) was a local runner and outdoor enthusiast from Halesowen and often trained with many of the club. He was a great supporter of our events and members and could often be seen at events cheering the Harriers on around the country.

He enjoyed climbing and ascended the Matterhorn in 1971. He returned in 1972 when, after reaching the summit again, he was descending and an accident occured that changed his life. He slipped and broke his neck . After a remarkable rescue, a spell in a Swiss hospital and then a further eight months in hospital at Oswestry he returned home where he began rebuilding his life.

Ron Bentley fondly remembers Len inspiring him during his World Record run. Len was driven down by his wife and did a lap of the track with Ron on his crutches.

The funeral will be held on 27th June 2017 at 1.30pm at St Hilda's, Abbey Road (Smethwick), Warley Woods, West Midlands, B67 5NQ.

Our thoughts go to his family and friends.
